Resident Evil 9: Requiem – Release Date, Gameplay, Story, Characters & More!

Resident Evil 9: Everything We Know So Far

Release Date & Reveal: Capcom finally pulled back the curtain on Resident Evil 9 (officially subtitled Requiem), confirming a launch on February 27, 2026. The announcement came via an official Capcom press release, which also revealed that the game will hit PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — and surprisingly even Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 — at launch. This lines up with earlier insider whispers that RE9 was eyeing Q1 2026. In fact, rumors anticipated a reveal at the Summer Game Fest 2025 (June 9, 2025), and sure enough Capcom treated fans to a cinematic teaser there. We’re officially on the clock: mark your calendars for late Feb 2026!

Gameplay & Style: Requiem promises to mix classic Resident Evil thrills with fresh twists. Players will be able to swap seamlessly between first-person and third-person camera views at any time, letting you choose either immersion (ala RE7’s tense exploration) or an over-the-shoulder action vibe (more like RE2/RE4). Capcom says this dual perspective is fully fluid – so one minute you’re creeping through a dark hallway in first-person, and the next you can pop out to third-person to scout corners or squeeze in that sneaky knife attack. The game will still lean heavily into survival-horror staples: expect inventory-choking puzzles, claustrophobic corridors, and seriously creepy monster chases. In our early previews, Grace Ashcroft (the new heroine) is seen being pursued by a light-sensitive creature through narrow halls, with no weapon to defend herself – very RE-style panic. Then in other sections, you’ll hop into Leon Kennedy’s boots for “intense, adrenaline-pumping action” – think more ammo, more guns, and more baddies to blast. In short, Requiem looks to be a mash-up of all the series’ favorites: one minute you’re surviving a nightmare, the next you’re in a shootout worthy of classic RE. (Rumor has it there might even be stealth elements – some leaks call it “stealthy in parts and shooty in others”, which sounds like it’ll keep things varied and unpredictable.)

Graphics & Visual Upgrades: Holy moly, this one looks next-gen. Capcom is hyping RE9 as a “significant evolution” in graphical fidelity, powered by its cutting-edge RE Engine (and the new RE neXt tech). We’re talking ultra-realistic character models, movie-quality facial expressions, skin pores so detailed you can see sweat beads – even real-time path-traced lighting on city streets. (In fact, Nvidia put out a demo trailer for Requiem, showcasing jaw-dropping path tracing: you can see realistic reflections on wet asphalt and detailed urban scenes of a rebuilt Raccoon City district.) Every fur strand, bullet casing and particle effect is sharper than ever. Capcom even mentions PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X enhancements, so expect rock-solid high frame rates with DLSS 4 and all the ray-tracing bells and whistles. In short, graphics-wise Requiem is aiming for “spine-chilling realism” – the city looks lived-in, the monsters look disgusting in exactly the way you want, and every cutscene feels cinematic.

Story & Lore: Requiem is officially a blast from the past – literally. The story takes us back to Raccoon City, the site of the original Umbrella disaster. It’s been about 30 years in RE-timeline since the city’s nuclear missile strike, and Capcom is rebuilding the ruins of Raccoon City (based on the layouts from the RE2/3 remakes).

The protagonist we follow is Grace Ashcroft, a new character with deep series ties. Grace is the teenage daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft (a figure from the old PS2 Outbreak games), and she’s been living with trauma from her past. In the trailer/story so far, we learn Grace is haunted by her mother’s unexplained death at the old Wrenwood Hotel eight years prior, and now she’s captured in Dr. Victor Gideon’s creepy lab facility. Clearly, Grace’s journey will involve facing those personal demons and the literal monsters on Raccoon’s streets. Besides the official lore, there are juicy whispers from leaks: one recent playtester leak (via Bloody Disgusting) claimed the plot involves Leon and Jill traveling to a mysterious island where bioweapons research is going on (using Eveline’s mold, etc.).

If true, that would tie back to RE7/Village, but keep in mind none of that has been confirmed – Capcom has only shown Grace and Leon so far. Bottom line: Requiem looks to revisit Resident Evil’s roots (Raccoon City) while weaving in threads from recent games (the Ashcroft family, Village’s Megamycete) – a mash-up of old and new lore that should excite longtime fans.

Characters – Old and New: Players will get two main heroes this time. First up, Leon S. Kennedy is officially back as a playable character (no surprise – he survived RE4 and he’s still a top RE poster boy). Leon even brings his own Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT to the game (which we saw in a cinematic), so expect high-octane action when he’s on-screen. Leon’s return was confirmed in the trailer, and the devs say his sections are all about action. Grace Ashcroft is the other lead – she’s entirely new and looks to be the “survival horror” half of the game, experiencing more vulnerability and fear. Grace’s connection to Outbreak-era Alyssa Ashcroft means she’s literally legacy RE lineage, so fans are already intrigued. And what about the bad guys? The teasers gave us a glimpse of Dr. Victor Gideon, a twisted villain who has Grace locked up – he’s clearly a major new foe. Insider leaks also mention a mysterious Mr. Simon overseeing new viruses, but again nothing official on that yet. As for other returning faces, Capcom hasn’t confirmed Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine or anyone else for Requiem. (One rumor even floated Jill teaming up with Leon on an Umbrella-style island mission, but that might conflict with the Raccoon City setting, so take it with a grain of salt.) For now, Leon and Grace are front and center as the duo teaming up (or splitting the game’s chapters) to tackle this city’s nightmarish comeback.

Voice Cast & Rumors: Voice acting news is thin so far, but the big reveal is that Troy Baker – veteran voice of characters like Leon’s son Jake in RE6 – is confirmed to be in RE9, per the new trailer. Fans are buzzing about who he might play (the assumption is he voices one of the new villains, given Baker’s track record as a go-to bad guy actor). Other than that, Capcom hasn’t officially announced who voices Grace or Leon this time. (Previously, Leon was voiced by Nick Apostolides in RE2/Village, so it’d make sense for him to return if he’s available.) Without hard info, we expect a top-notch cast given Capcom’s emphasis on cinematic realism – and obviously we’ll update once they do announce more voices.

Leaks & Teasers: Capcom has been dropping hints to keep the hype up. The game’s World Premiere trailer at Summer Game Fest 2025 set the scene (and teased that a playable demo would hit Gamescom later). Shortly after, Nvidia showed off a tech trailer focusing on Requiem’s path-traced visuals, even revealing a new city level (likely Wrenwood in Raccoon City) complete with dynamic traffic and pedestrians. Leakers like insider “Dusk Golem” chimed in too – he claimed the game will have “big open levels” to explore, hinting Requiem might break out of tight corridors into more expansive areas. And of course fan sleuths spotted hidden clues (even references to Requiem’s subtitle in RE7!). On the unconfirmed side, some playtest leaks (again, take ‘em with salt) have detailed weird new creatures (“Goat-Man”?) and story beats like Eveline’s voice calling out in your head. Bottom line: what we know is that trailers have shown Grace strapped upside-down in a Raccoon City hospital, Leon gearing up in the city streets, and horrifying bio-terror mayhem. Everything official says “horror + action” in a ruined city – which is exactly what RE fans live for.

Get Ready to Scream: In short, Resident Evil 9: Requiem is shaping up to be huge. It’s packing next-gen graphics on Capcom’s beefed-up engine, dual character storylines (horror and action), and tons of nods to the series’ history. We don’t know all the secrets yet, but the confirmed facts and spicy rumors alike point to a wild ride. Whether you’re into heart-pounding scares or adrenaline-fueled gunplay (or both!), Requiem looks ready to deliver. Stay tuned – more details will keep leaking, and the official demos are on the horizon. Until then, start brushing up on your shotgun aim… you’re going to need it!
